Great Software

Just OK Software

Reviews:

OpenOffice
Great - A bit bloated... but, hey all Office Suites are. I have only used OpenOffice for the last 6 years and my Windoze office-mates have been none the wiser.
Inkscape
Great - A little unstable at times, but a fantastic tool with enough depth to keep a person busy for a long time.
Firefox
Just OK - While Firefox is undoubtedly the best browser I have every used, it still could use some work. For example, when streaming video firefox will allow 'helper' applications to take unreasonable amounts of system resources and then not do a good job of cleaning up afterwords, leaving a system extremely sluggish until stopping and restarting Firefox.
GIMP
Great - Unless you are in need of color-matched pre-press output, the Gimp is a very powerful and full-featured raster editing tool. Though not quite as many quick and easy built-in filters as Photoshop, Gimp is available on multiple platforms and, when paired with a good vector-editor provides far more power than most non-professional graphic artists will ever use.
Audacity
Great - Audacity takes sound editing and puts it in terms that a non-audiophile and non-audio engineer can understand and make work. Bottom line, Audacity does, 'just work'.
