Just OK Software

Reviews:

Movica
Just OK - Does not support many audio or video formats or video containers. Only supports rudimentary actions as described (its a bit too little functionality for most use). Requires .NET. Windows only.
Avidemux
Great - Very nice for re-encoding and simple post-processing of a single clip (cutting, color-correction...).

Its not comparable in features to a full editor, but its simplicity (no learning to be done for people familiar with video editing) makes up for that.
picogen
Just OK - Can already produce visually beautiful landscapes, but I fail to see any way to export them and use them in other programs.

Also the program is not easy to use, well-documented, or performant.
Blender
Great - Absolutely amazing. This program enables anyone motivated enough to create 3d images at or near the state-of-the-art.

The game engine is not that good, though - but that is just one more feature in an amazing lineup this program has.
Context Free
Just OK - More limited than, but about equally complex to use as Processing.
VLC media player
Great - The only other player that I'd use besides of mplayer. Plays a lot of media formats and file containers -all common ones and then some-, can handle incomplete files, supports all subsystems for audio / video output used on Linux, and more.
Jedit
Just OK - Presentation / layout is lacking by default and while it has most features, it has no sophistication. Things relevant to programming like syntax completion features are not nearly as sophisticated as those of better competitiors like VIM, Emacs, or full-fledged IDEs.
MPlayer
Great - Fabulous support for movies. Does everything a local movie player might need to do.

The only other software that even compares is VLC.
OpenOffice
Great - The best office-style software. Even better than KEdit, definitely better than MS Office - in particular because the menus (most importantly the context sensitive ones) are quicker to use and less nonsensical.
Inkscape
Great - A lot of functionality, performs quite speedily even with large pictures (this can be very much an issue even with commercial vector editing software).
Hugin
Great - Very clever software. Uses top-notch algorithms to do its job, and whatever errors the results still may have (usually none) can be manually corrected.
