Great - R can handle *huge* data sets with ease given enough memory. It's one of the most powerful tools for handling numbers available.

VLC media player
Great - One of the best for windows. Plays DVDs, and almost any media file. Has completely replaced WMP for video for me.

Great - It takes a little work to get it on the Xbox, but it turns an old video game system into the poor-man's apple TV, but with more functionality.

Great - I've been using Thunderbird a long time, and it's always held up great for large volumes of email. Thanks to IMAP it fully interfaces with gmail.

Great - If you want a powerful chat client with lots of customization options, this is a great tool. I use it for Jabber/GTalk and AIM.
