It's a video player for people who like to play videos, as opposed to people who like viewing targeted ads or fighting DRM or hunting codecs online or ripping a DVD to some weird pirate format first or chatting with other people watching the same video or compiling the code yourself.
I mean, I guess it's okay if you're INTO that sort of thing. But seriously, who ARE these people?

Great piece of software, but it has an insane amount of dependencies, the most of any software I have encountered. When you include the dependencies of the dependencies, the are about 100 packages needed to compile VLC.
I would hate to build or install VLC on a Distro without automated dependency resolution (like Slackware).
Despite that, it still the best video player and a pretty good general-purpose media player.

Used to be better than great, but it all fell apart after version 0.8. Later versions are just riddled with problems and instability, as is evident from multiple discussions on tech sites.
