It's free, it has plugin support (including transparent FTP which I find invaluable) and most features found in commercial text editors like UltraEdit.

I'm a Unix programmer and I also help with the code for the FOSS X11/GTK-based Source Code Editor; Bluefish; However, when I have to work/code/etc on a Windows box, the first thing I do is install Notepad++ and Cygwin!!! Out of the box it's absolutely wonderful. With additional plugins, etc. it only gets better! I've been using it for ~4 years (or more?) now and I don't ever recommend any other FOSS source code/text editor for windows to any coder/etc that I meetl Great work!!!

Blazing good, fast, feature-rich text editor.
Two complaints: html.erb syntax highlighting isn't supported... and windows only.

This product is great. I tried all the text editors (for Windows) and they all good features but none of them had all the features and ability to configure them as Notepad++ does. I love it and get all my co-workers to use it as well.

Hardly any editor comes close either on windows and linux on being light, fast, feature packed, useful and free. Great for php and web developing I wish there was a native version in linux (I use in wine currently and works fine), maybe the closest are geany and kate but kate is heavy and geany's multiview is very limited and has some sintax highliting stability problems

It's fast and lightweight (opens instantly, no matter how many tabs you have saved), does intelligent syntax highlighting for nearly anything you'd care to open, and has all the general purpose commands and hotkeys that every programmer can't do without.
For speed, balance between utility and simplicity, and ease of use (an important consideration!) it has everything else beat hands down.

Comparing Notepad++ to TextPad it only has 2 flaws. The User defined Syntax highlighting is a bit weaker and it tends to choke on large files. Other than that it's great

Powerful and lightweight. Has plug-ins that do just about anything and a record feature that simplifies making macros. Another user commented on stability. I've had a few problems with some builds and none with others. The occasional hiccups don't bother me too much because I can't live without it.

It's really not acceptable for an editor to crash. That is one application that needs to be rock-stable. Out of the dozens of editors I've used and tested over the last few years, Notepad++ is one of the very few that crashed.

I had the same experience everyone else had. Once I started using it I didn't stop. I used to use linux on the desktop for many many years, but recently switched to Windows..infact Vista is the first windows OS i've ever used on a daily basis. And having notepad++ there for all the editing and coding is great! It's nice to see such a high quality piece of software made by a community. Thanks!
