Great - Fabulous support for movies. Does everything a local movie player might need to do.

The only other software that even compares is VLC.

Great - MPlayer let my 300 MHz Pentium 3 laptop (with minimal memory) watch full screen movies without lag, a feat that no other player would do on this computer.

Great - The best video player around. Period.

Great - Get this (or in Windows typically SMPlayer, which includes it) when you get fed up with VLC's endless quirks and failures.

You'll probably want to have both on hand.

Great - Some of the best software ever written. So good that I invested several hours writing plugins for it. :)

Great - supports all formats and is minimalistic

Great - Best video player out there.

Great - Simply the Best, but the command line very comprehensive with a HUGE list of options/parameters to make the best use of it's capabilities, and sometimes just to get it to play a given file. Do get SMplayer, a front-end which gives almost every option in a GUI that's really easy to use - it is to be found at

http://smplayer.berlios.de

There is a package in Ubuntu which is the most recent (at Dec '09) version.

Also you must make sure to download codecs from the MPlayer website and if you don't alrea

Great - For some reason I personally like the commandline only mplayer better than VLC and prefer it over using anything else if it works. But yes, it has flaws mostly coming from shared libraries it links to, like ffmpeg/x264 or libmatroska to just name a few example. VLC seems to work around issues more flawlessly.

Great - The interface is just superb: no interface at all, just great keystrokes for the ultimate control.
~ anonymous on Jun 5, 2009

Just OK - Awkward user interface, slow to start up and sometimes buggy. VLC ist the better alternative.

Great - Vast number of features, plays everything - brilliant.
~ anonymous on May 19, 2009

Great - Very flexible and powerful yet hard to configure properly to get good quality playback.

Good for encoding/operating on movies.
~ anonymous on Apr 29, 2009

Great - Plays ANYTHING. Also, the command line version is the lightest thing out there so large movie files can be played without slowing down the system as much as a GUI program.

Great - The god of media players, plays anything, anywhere, anytime without fail. One of the best pieces of software ever written, period.
