The Ur-Quan Masters is a science fiction adventure game. It lets you explore a huge galaxy in search of events, species, and star systems. You control a single starship and its attached mini-fleet of combat vessels and improve it until you can challenge the might of the Ur-Quan (the current bullies in this sector of the galaxy).
Sauerbraten (a.k.a. Cube 2) is a free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS. Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine. The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license, read the docs for more on how you can use the engine).
FlightGear is a multi-platform, cooperative flight simulator development project. The goal of the FlightGear project is to create a sophisticated flight simulator framework for use in research or academic environments, for the development and pursuit of other interesting flight simulation ideas, and as an end-user application.
Nexuiz is a first-person shooter game. The gameplay is deathmatch, with the most excessive possible speeds and weapons, giving incredibly intense fast-paced action. Other game modes include team deathmatch, capture the flag, domination, and many mutators and weapon options like rocket arena and instagib. You can fight through the single-player campaign, going through more than 20 levels, or play online.
Oolite is a 3-D space trading and combat simulator. You are the pilot of a spacecraft capable of interstellar travel to other nearby planetary systems using wormholes generated by the ship's engines. Each system contains only one inhabited planet, with an orbiting space station. There is no set goal or objective in the game, other than to accrue money and Elite rating.
Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme. You must build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, you can recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host. Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.
S.C.O.U.R.G.E. is a Rogue-like game with a modern 3-D interface that lets you rotate the view, zoom in and out, and view special effects. In the game, a group of four characters searches for treasure, kills enemies, and gains levels.
Bitfighter is a free multi-player 2-D space combat game with Robotron-like controls. It's a team-based strategy game featuring retro vector graphics and customizable ships. It's fast, fun, and frenetic. No package provided for Linux, but most recent release will compile and run.
Angband is a computer dungeon exploration game based loosely on the books of J.R.R.Tolkien. You explore a deep dungeon, kill monsters, try to equip yourself with weapons and armor, and finally face Morgoth, The Dark Enemy.
FreedroidRPG is a mature sci-fi isometric role-playing game with refined graphics and music tracks. The game tells the story of a world destroyed by a conflict between the bots and their human masters. Play as Tux in a quest to save the world from the murderous rebel bots. Besides the hack'n'slash action phases, dialogs with dozens of non-player characters take care of storytelling. The player can fight with melee or ranged weapons, take control of his enemies by hacking, and remotely execute code on enemy robots.
Netrek is a multi-player battle simulation with a Star Trek theme. You captain starships to engage enemy vessels, bomb armies, and invade planets in order to expand your team's space empire. The ultimate goal is to eliminate the enemy race, but the carnage of battles along the way is ruthlessly fast-paced and a lot of fun. It's a team-oriented strategy game with real-time dogfighting.
Have the mascots of your favorite free software titles battle it out in the Wormux arena using dynamite, grenades, baseball bats, and bazookas. Exterminate your opponent in a 2-D environment with toon-style scenery. Each player controls the team of his choice (penguin, gnu, firefox, wilber, ...) and must destroy his adversary using more or less casual weapons. Although a minimum of strategy is required to vanquish, Wormux is pre-eminently a "convivial mass murder" game where, turn by turn, each member of each team attempts to produce a maximum of damage to his opponents.
Fish Fillets NG is strictly a puzzle game. The goal in every of the seventy levels is always the same: find a safe way out. The fish utter witty remarks about their surroundings, the various inhabitants of their underwater realm quarrel among themselves or comment on the efforts of your fish. The whole game is accompanied by quiet, comforting music.

Hedgewars is a turn-based strategy game. Each player controls a team of several hedgehogs. Players take turns with one of their hedgehogs to use whatever tools and weapons are available to attack and kill the opponents' hedgehogs, thereby winning the game. Each turn is time-limited to ensure that players do not hold up the game with excessive thinking or moving.
Pingus is a free Lemmings-like game with 22 playable levels. You command a bunch of penguins and guide them around in levels. Since the animals walk on their own, you can influence them only by giving them commands, such as build a bridge, dig a hole, or redirect all animals in the other direction. The goal of each level is to reach the exit.
SuperTuxKart is a 3-D go-kart racing game. As many as four people can play on one PC, racing against each other or trying to beat the computer. It features a variety of tracks, characters, and items. A network multiplayer feature is under development.
Simutrans is a cross-platform transportation simulation game. In Simutrans you can build transport networks with platforms, quays, level crossings, signals, and more. Transport passengers between nearby cities with a commuter train or use a high-speed train to connect cities further apart. Fleet of ships and ferries, buses, trams, trolley buses, trucks, and planes are at your disposal. More exotic ways of transport include monorails and maglevs. Each passanger (and unit of goods) is intelligent, knows where it needs to go, and can transfer from one vehicle to another to reach its destination.
MegaMek is an unofficial online version of the Classic BattleTech board game. This platform-independent software supports nearly all Total Warfare BattleTech rules and technology, with support for Tactical Operations rules and technology in progress. Aerospace rules are also included, with the exception of ground/air interaction.
OpenLieroX is an addictive real-time Worms 2-D shoot-em-up backed by an active gamers community. It features online play; customizable weapons, levels, and characters; and dozens of levels and mods. The game is based on a deathmatch setting, where multiple players face off in a closed level. Each player is equipped with five weapons selected out of all the weapons allowed, and with a ninja rope that allows the player to move in any direction. Players begin with a set amount of lives, and while the game records the number of kills, the last man standing is usually considered the winner. LieroX also allows team deathmatches, which has made it common for players to form clans.
