Text Analysis Markup System (TAMS) is a convention for identifying themes in texts (web pages, interviews, field notes). It was designed for use in ethnographic and discourse research. TAMS Analyzer works with TAMS to let you assign ethnographic codes to passages of a text by selecting the relevant text and double-clicking the name of the code on a list. It then allows you to extract, analyze, and save coded information. The Macintosh version of the program also includes full support for transcription (back space, insert time code, jump to time code, etc.) when working with data on sound files.
Weft QDA is an easy-to-use tool to assist in the analysis of textual data such as interview transcripts, written texts and fieldnotes. It includes a number of fairly standard CAQDAS features. Text documents can be imported from plain text or PDF files. Text passages within documents can then be marked (or 'coded') as relating to any number of 'categories', which are organised into a hierarchical tree. These passages can later be retrieved, reviewed, and further analysed. In addition, Weft includes a fast text search facility, the ability to attach memos and notes to documents and categories, and can carry out set operations and cross-tabulations to see how categories overlap. (Note: the Mac download is a development version! There is currently no stable Mac release.)
