VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for a wide range of audio and video formats, as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. It doesn't need any external codec or program to work.
Audacious is an advanced audio player. It is free, lightweight, based on GTK2, runs on Linux and many other *nix platforms and is focused on audio quality and supporting a wide range of audio codecs. Its advanced audio playback engine is considerably more powerful than GStreamer. Audacious is a fork of Beep Media Player (BMP), which itself forked from XMMS.
XMMS is an audio player similar to Winamp. Currently it plays mpeg layer 1/2/3 wav/au and all formats supported by libmikmod, also it plays CD audio and more. It works on most unix systems with sound, preferable OSS but on i386 systems any sounddrivers that is OSS compatible should work without any problems. This player has most of the features as the original winamp from Windows 95/98/NT but it will of course feature some specials only available for the linux version.
aTunes is a full-featured Java-based audio player and manager. It plays MP3, Ogg, WMA, WAV, FLAC, and MP4 files and streaming Internet radio. It also lets users edit tags, organize music, and rip audio CDs.
Amarok is a music player and more. You can also use it to organize a library of music into folders according to genre, artist, and album; edit tags attached to most music formats; associate album art; attach lyrics; and automatically "score" music as it is played. It integrates with Last.fm, Ampache, Librivox, Jamendo, and other online services.
wxMusik is an MP3 and Ogg player and music manager. It features advanced crossfading for smooth playback, 16-band dual-channel equalizer, powerful batch tagging, SQL database, advanced playback options, and static and dynamic playlist creation. It also plays Icecast and Shoutcast streams.
Songbird is a dual-platform (Windows and Mac) media player based on Mozilla code. It lets you play, manage, and discover music. You can customize its appearance with skins, and create dynamic playlists that automatically update based on criteria you set. Supports some media players and can support iPods with an extension.
