VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for a wide range of audio and video formats, as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. It doesn't need any external codec or program to work.
The MPlayer media player can play a wide variety of media formats. It can also save streamed content to a file. A companion program, MEncoder, can take an input stream or file and transcode it into several different output formats, optionally applying various transforms along the way.

Open Source Digital Audio CD Extractor. CDex can extract the data directly (digital) from an Audio CD, which is generally called a CD Ripper or a CDDA utility. The resulting audio file can be a plain WAV file (useful for making compilation audio CDs) or the ripped audio data can be compressed using an audio encoder. Xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from local disk drives, and displays multimedia streamed over the Internet.
Kantaris Media Player aims to be an all-in-one audio and video player. Its GUI and features are similar to those of Windows Media Player. Video playback is based upon Videolan Client (VLC), which enables Kantaris to play almost anything without the need to install any codecs separately. MediaInfo supplies extended technical and tag information about video and audio files. It also provides a DLL file that can be copied into eMule's install directory to show more information about media files in the Show Details dialog. It even checks whether the file extension correctly matches that of the file's header.
